A wide variety of experiences await the children every day.
Three's Curriculum
In the threes program at Cedar Hills Co-op, we strive to provide an atmosphere for children to grow and learn which is:
- Safe
- Comfortable
- Nurturing
- Supportive
- Inclusive
- Developmentally Appropriate
- Flexible
- Interesting
- Fun!
Young children are movers. A great deal of research has linked early childhood movement to the development of the brain. We now know movement is a contributing factor not only to each child's physical and emotional health but also to his of her intellectual growth. Children in the threes class at Cedar Hills Co-op move a lot. They spend most of each day at preschool choosing their own activities and moving about from one to the other as they choose. Within these various activities, both indoors and out, there are many opportunities to move in a variety of ways to develop both large and small muscles and a variety of skills. Even our brief group times always contain movement activities: finger plays, songs to move to, things to touch, feel, or examine.
Imagination takes off - with a few props.
The preschool years are also a time of social growth therefore, much attention is paid to the development of positive social skills. Many activities are designed to encourage social interactions and cooperative play. There are also areas to play alone (we all need our space at times, as well as time to reflect). Caring adults are nearby to help children learn how to get a turn or how to negotiate a disagreement.
Most of all, the preschool years are a time of self-discovery for young children, a time to learn to be and appreciate just who they are. The primary goal for the threes class is to support and contribute to each child's feelings of self worth, self-understanding and self-expression. We, the teachers and parents of Cedar Hills Co-op, do this by appreciating each child's unique personality, skills and creativity. We contribute to children's self esteem by really listening to their thoughts and feelings about the world and validating them. We also contribute to a child's strong sense of self value by empowering children to make choices, by respecting those choices, by encouraging and assisting them in pursuing their own interests and ideas, and by providing opportunities for them to succeed, feel strong, and powerful.
Our overarching focus of study in the threes is who we are, how we are growing and the changes brought by the seasons.
